UPDATE
16:11 The VKontakte press service clarified that the company, according to the law , is obliged to provide information to law enforcement agencies upon request. “However, the request does not disclose the specific circumstances of the case - we never know if we are being asked for data on a serial killer or in a case “for a meme,” a representative of the social network said.
Maria Motuznaya, a resident of Barnaul, accused of inciting hatred (Article 282.1 of the Criminal Code) and insulting the feelings of believers (Article 148.1 of the Criminal Code) for pictures stored on the VKontakte social network, published on Twitter the case materials, which were provided to the investigation by the administration of the social network (data signed by the head of the security services "VKontakte").
Data on the IP addresses from which the page was accessed, as well as the time of visits, were attached to the Motuznaya case; history of changing passwords, attached phone number and username.
VKontakte also provided a history of contacting the social network support service and a history of page blocking for spam.
Recall that the trial of Maria Motuzna began on August 6, the next hearing will be held on August 15. A Barnaul resident tweeted that she had become a defendant in an extremism case for religious-themed memes, as well as memes about blacks, which she saved on her old VKontakte page at the end of July.
On May 8, they came to her apartment with a search, confiscated her home computer and telephone, after which they took her for interrogation, where she confessed out of fright. Later, Motuznaya reported that students from the Altai branch of the Russian Academy of National Economy wrote statements against her.
In early August, Mail.ru Group, which owns the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki, called for an amnesty for those convicted for likes and reposts on social networks and proposed that they stop punishing them in the future.
At the same time, according to the statistics of the SOVA center (p. 65 of the document), most cases for statements on the Internet are initiated precisely on the basis of publications in the social networks of Mail.ru Group. In 2017, among 182 convictions for posting materials on social networks, at least 138 were against VKontakte and 4 against Odnoklassniki. In another 38 cases, a specific social network was not indicated, and the center's experts assumed that the materials were also posted on VKontakte.
