FBI fires agent who promised to stop Trump from becoming US president

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fired agent Peter Strok, who criticized Donald Trump in personal correspondence. Strok's lawyer Eitan Golman told The Washington Post.

The reason for Strok's dismissal was his correspondence with FBI lawyer Lisa Page, with whom the agent had an affair. In particular, in August 2016, when asked by Page if Trump would become president, Strok replied: “No. We will stop him."

The US Department of Justice considered that these messages demonstrate Stroke's bias against Trump, as well as the agent's willingness to influence "the prospects for his election victory."

Strok apologized for the messages, saying they did not affect his work with the FBI.

• Strok worked for the FBI for 22 years. He was part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. Mueller removed Strok from the investigation in the summer of 2017 after his correspondence with Page became known.
