Mail.ru Group asks to amnesty convicts for reposts

Mail.ru Group, which owns the social networks of VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and My World, sent to the State Duma, the Supreme and Constitutional Courts and the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation appeals with the initiative to decriminalize users in social networks and amnesty of those who were convicted of reposts and “likes”.

“Today we sent the following official appeals: to the State Duma of the Russian Federation with a request to initiate introduction of a bill on an amnesty of convicts under Articles 282 (exciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity) and 148 (violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. An amnesty should be applied to convicts for extremism and dissemination of information and other activity in social networks (including likes, reposts, images publications) in cases where such actions did not have socially dangerous consequences, ”the press service said in a statement.

In early August, the leadership of Mail.ru Group advocated an amnesty of convicts for extremism due to reposts and “likes” in social networks and the decriminalization of this kind of action.

The managing director of VKontakte Andrei Rogozov recently announced that in response to an increase in the number of criminal cases of extremism for publications on the Internet, the social network intends to ensure the complete privacy of personal pages of its users.
