Turkey Starts Cancelling iPhone Orders After Erdogan's Statement on Boycotting American Electronics

Turkish companies have begun canceling orders for iPhones after the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a boycott of American electronics, Hurriyet reported, citing sources.

In particular, orders for iPhones worth a total of $50 million were cancelled by three large companies operating in Istanbul's Dogubank shopping mall.

According to Hurriyet, Turkish companies are also turning away from other American electronics.

• The United States imposed sanctions on two Turkish ministers in early August over the prosecution of American pastor Andrew Brunson ; Washington soon also raised tariffs on steel and aluminum for Turkey.
• The Turkish lira has fallen by a quarter in a few days amid worsening relations with the US. Ankara has accused Washington of unleashing an economic war and raised tariffs on some American goods.
