The coordinator of the “Left Front” Sergei Udaltsov appealed the decision of the Meshchansky Court of Moscow in the case of a repeated violation when organizing a rally. On Tuesday, August 14, the court found Udaltsov guilty in this case and sentenced him to 30 days of administrative arrest. In court, Udaltsov did not admit guilt. He called the charges brought against him far-fetched. According to him, on July 28 no one made any claims against him.

“Sergei himself filed an appeal against the arrest today, and in the near future his lawyer will also appeal the arrest,” the coordinator’s wife, Anastasia Udaltsova, told TASS. The Moscow City Court has not yet set a date for considering the complaint.

According to her, Udaltsov has been on a dry hunger strike for two days now. Thus, he is protesting against the government’s proposed pension reform, she explained.

The police detained Udaltsov on the afternoon of August 14. He was taken to the Krasnoselskoye police station. Later that day, the court arrested him.

Udaltsov himself explained that the charges brought against him are related to the fact that before the start of the rally on Sakharov Avenue on July 28, during a gathering of participants, he “organized another, unauthorized event, voiced slogans, and destroyed portraits of people similar to members of the government.” The rally against pension reform, unlike Udaltsov’s action, was coordinated with the mayor’s office.

On July 19, the State Duma approved in the first reading the government’s proposed bill on changes to the pension system. 328 deputies voted for the adoption of the project, 104 were against, and there were no abstentions. The document proposes increasing the retirement age for both men (up to 65 years) and women (up to 63 years). The second reading of the bill is scheduled for the fall.
