Alexander Genis: Starting the new episode of our cultural and historical cycle "1918-A century later," I want, as we usually do, to visit the fronts of the First World War. The summer of 1918 is a turning point in the history of war. The attack of the German army failed, the second battle on the marne was lost: again the Germans stood near Paris and again did not take it. After that, the new stage in the war began - the so -called hundred -day offensive. This was the first large -scale offensive of the Entente troops, which led to success. After the allies, the French and the British, successfully attacked the Germans, the outcome of the war was decided.
A very important circumstance for the fracture was the emergence of an American expeditionary corps in France. By the summer of 1918, there were a lot of Americans in Europe - a million two hundred thousand people. These gigantic new forces radically changed the previous alignment of forces. The second factor is tanks. There were already quite a lot of tanks by this time so that they had a decisive effect on the outcome of the struggle. For the first time, it became clear that the war was going on to an end, the world was visible for the first time, the victory was first loomed. And it was unusually important. Recall that many then believed that the war would never end, it walked, and walked, and walked, the forces were equal, it was impossible to do anything in order to finally stop this endless war.
You know, Solomon, what did I think when I remembered these events? The fact that Russia left the war just when it could defeat it with the allies. And then there would be no civil war, then everything could go differently. Russia would have remained an ally of the Entente, who it was, it turned out that the First World War was won by Russia. This would have changed a lot. But instead of the First World War of Russia, there was a civil war, which claimed much more lives.
Well, now, when we visited the war and remembered it, let's talk about something else, because in Russia 1918 we were busy completely different. We investigated one plot: how we reacted to the revolution, such great poets as Mayakovsky and Mandelstam to the new Soviet government. One accepted the revolution, the other treated it ambivalently. But there were authors who categorically did not accept the revolution. Today I propose to talk about it.
Probably the sharpest rejection of the revolution in Bunin’s book “Cursed Days”. I know that you do not like this opus, but I appreciate it, because there, of course in Samizdat, I first read, for example, the following words: "Yesterday I saw Lenin. Lord, what an animal."
Solomon Volkov: wonderful prose. Subtle stylist Bunin in all its glory.
Alexander Genis: I can’t say anything, because when I read it in the Soviet Union, this phrase seemed delightful to me, and we quoted each other with pleasure.
But let's not talk about Bunin, let's talk about another writer who, perhaps, more acutely responded to a new reality.
Vasily Rozanov
Solomon Volkov: This is Rozanov. Rozanov’s entries from his last incredibly tragic book “The Apocalypse of our Time” are the most piercing lines about the revolution. When you read these pages, it seems that they are written, I can’t even say with blood, this, as always, Rozanov’s, some incredible strange mixture of blood, bile, sperm, all together, is some kind of alloy that is inherent only to Rozanov.
Alexander Genis: Or a solution. You forgot sweat, and tears, and the gastric juice that stood out with him when he recalled the well -fed pre -revolutionary homeland. This book, of course, is very strange. But what is not strange for Rozanov? He has everything. He released it with separate small brochures. At the very beginning, he stated what this book is about:
“There is no doubt that the deep foundation of everything that is now happening is that in European (to everyone, including Russian) humanity, tremendous voids from past Christianity formed; and everything falls into these emptys: thrones, classes, classes, labor, wealth. Everything is shocked, everyone is shocked, everything is dying, everything falls into the void of the soul that has been lost, which has lost ancient times. contents ".
And then the familiar topic of Rozanov, but here it sounds in a completely new way. Rozanov writes:
“What, in essence, happened? We all praised. We wandered under the sun and on the ground, not thinking that the sun sees and the earth listens. We, in essence, played in literature.“ So well written. ”And the whole thing was“ well -written ”, but he“ wrote ” - before that, there was no case. In terms of content, Russian literature is such an abundance and impudence, impudence and impudence. Like not a single literature. "
Thus, Rozanov accuses of the revolution what Russia best succeeded: its great literature of the XIX century. How do you read such lines?
Solomon Volkov: Rozanov is so unique in Russian culture, in Russian literature that it is difficult to talk about him, because either you love him unconditionally, or you hate him, I have never met Rozanov.
Alexander Genis: Look at me! I have an average attitude, because love and, I would say, irritation in approximately the same proportion. It seems to me that Rozanov is sometimes so piercing, so delightful that all claims fall off with him, but then the claims are still returning when you are cooling after those lines that were driven into sweat. It seems to me that this is due to his incredible style: a mixture of sacred with the profane. Who loved Rozanov precisely because he recognized his style in him? Venichka Erofeev: close people, close style. Once Grisha Pole, a wonderful publisher who loved the books very much, a friend of Dovlatov, released the book of Benes Erofeev "Eyes of the eccentric."
Solomon Volkov: I have this edition, a yellow -shaped cover.
Alexander Genis: Absolutely. The Pole asked Petya Vile to write a preface to this publication.
Solomon Volkov: A book, by the way, with your inscription.
V. Bakhchanyan. The cover to the book of V. Erofeev “Vasily Rozanov. Eyes of the eccentric”. New York, 1982
Alexander Genis: You see, she is already a hundred years old. Vagrich Bakhchanyan made an amazing picture on the cover. He portrayed Christ on the cross, and behind the eye, which looks from behind the shoulder of Christ at us. And this is Rozanov’s eye, so he looked at life - through biblical glasses, so he has a biblical style. And there is no need to argue with him.
In this sense, he reminds me of Khlebnikov. He had crazy practical ideas. For example, he proposed to build railways around the perimeter of the Russian Empire. He said: once in Italy the railways are so laid, then in Russia it will fit. Do you imagine on the coast of the Arctic Ocean to build railways? Of course, Khlebnikova cannot be perceived as a rationalist who gives useful tips. So Rozanova cannot be taken directly, he must be accepted as a poet, but they do not argue with poets - either they are listened or not.
Solomon Volkov: That's the point. You know, just now your speech, your monologue regarding Rozanov for me irrefutably proves that you really love Rozanova unconditionally, just like me. Yes, we read and our head understands: it is terrible, it is outrageous, it is no good, anger flows out of it, and something else is indecent. But the fact that we memorize these outrageous speeches for life for a lifetime, once you read some outrageous passage from Rozanov, he bites into you, it is impossible to forget him. And this is an evidence of his genius.
Alexander Genis: For example, this: "In Russia there is not a single pharmacist store, that is, made and traded by a Russian man." In another place, he explains why: “Where the German is drip, the Russian will splash.” This is a virtuoso of the Rozanov language.
Solomon Volkov: I want to read a wonderful description of the end of the Romanov dynasty, the end of the Russian kingdom. There is nothing similar in Russian literature. You know, when you read Bunin, then yes, there is only bitterness, there is no piercing one there, when you understand that in front of you is not a Tula master, which Bunin was portrayed, but a person for whom it really ended. For Bunin, life did not end with the revolution, but for Rozanov you understand that it has ended.
Alexander Genis: So it was - he died in February 1919.
Solomon Volkov: See what text: those who hear it, if, of course, the heart to Rozanov openly will be remembered for him forever:
“Rus was fucked in two days. Most of three - even“ New Time ”could not be closed as soon as Rus' closed. It is amazing that it crumbled all at once, to the details, to the privileges. And in fact, such a shock never happened, not excluding the“ great relocation of the peoples. ”There was an era,“ two or three centuries. ”It seems, there are no kingdom left. There are no troops left, and there is a strange way left-literally nothing. Behind the ribbon and what the king made him, this “serious peasant”.
Alexander Genis: Take a hurry to draw conclusions from this that Rozanov forgives everything to the king. There was also such a text: "Is it not enough to write about our smelly revolution - and about the kingdom rotten through and through - which truly stand each other."
Rozanov, of course, is an impulsive author, so you need to listen to every phrase, not paying attention to either the previous or subsequent.
Solomon Volkov: This is a monologue of a suffering person.
Alexander Genis: who yells in pain, so you cannot demand logic from him.
Solomon Volkov: These same ribbons cut from it, and it is felt. This is the main thing in culture: when a drop of fresh blood, you see it - and this is the victory of the author.
Alexander Genis: seasoned with irony. He writes like this:
"La Divina Comedia
With a clang, creak, screech, an iron curtain falls above the Russian history.
- The performance ended.
The audience got up.
- It's time to wear fur coats and return home.
They looked around.
But there were no fur coats or houses. "
What still amazes me in this essay, which worthy of joining school education is that it most accurately conveys the feeling of people who lived at that time.
Solomon Volkov: Again, first you need to love. If the school teaches how to love Rozanov, and this is individual. I can’t even recommend anyone, to say: you read Rozanov because I like him.
Alexander Genis: I know one technique: Rozanova cannot be read a lot, because he cannot but annoy. He is deliberately illegible. He did not discard anything, did not cross out anything - this is life for a continuous.
And yet. "The Apocalypse of our time" is a confession of time, he talks about what was in those months. And at the same time there is an official postscript to the cycle:
“I ask you to subscribe to him to send a signature amount, 3 rubles, 50 kopecks, at the address: Sergiev Posad, Moscow Province, Krasyukovka, Field Street, Belief Belyaeva, V.V. Rozanov. The author-publisher is assumed by mail. The name, surname and exact address of the subscriber should be written clearly.”
This is a touching phrase from the previous time, it is still a Victorian era when the mail worked. Nowadays, for example, mail is no longer working. If I send something to Moscow, then they can easily pass for three months, while the addressee receives this very letter, I don’t know what kind of caravans they send them.
And this is the remainder of the past time, which very many were yearning for then. Zaitsev has memories of this era, but a little later, when the NEP appeared. After the Civil War, Eclair first saw Zaitsev, he called him a symbol, "a message from the previous time." The same “ecler” was the mail for Rozanov. Something nagging in this postscript.
Solomon Volkov: Rozanov is generally an incredibly touching writer. Indeed, the best, I believe that it is written about the Russian revolution, belongs to his pen.
Alexander Genis: Now let's talk about the verses of that time, those authors who did not accept the revolution.
Zinaida Hippius
Solomon Volkov: I want to read a very strong poem of the poetess, which does not seem to be a big talent, that is, it cannot be put in a number of Akhmatova or Tsvetaeva, her poems are outdated - this is Zinaida Hippius. It seems to me to be a greater degree interesting now, like a memoirist, as a chronicle, as a person who kept a diary about the events of revolutionary time. Nevertheless, this is the poem that I am now reading is one of the most powerful verses by Zinaida Gippius. It’s just that it can not be loved. "A woman, a crazy proud" - so Blok described her in his much better verses. She was a very influential person at one time in symbolist circles, in her salon with her husband Merezhkovsky. This poem is called "December 14", of course, it appeals to the Decembrists, participants in the Decembrist uprising.
Already passed - and there is no return?
On a frosty day, in the treasured hour,
They are on the Senate Square
Then come down for the first time.
Go towards the hope,
To the steps of the winter porch ...
Under a thin uniform fabric
Greedy hearts tremble.
With your young love
Their feat is cutting-Oster,
But was extinguished by their own blood
Liberation fire.
Years, years, years ...
And we are all where you were.
Look, the first -born of freedom:
Frost on the banks of the Neva!
We are your children, your grandchildren ...
Unjustified graves
We feed ourselves in the same flour
And every day is less and less strength.
And on the day of the December anniversary
We are calling lovers.
Go to the mortal valleys,
With your breath - we will come to life.
We are weak - you have not forgotten you
We are eighty terrible years
They carried, cherished, stored
Your dazzling covenant.
And we will go to your feet
And you will drink wine ...
Oh, if you started you
We were destined to accomplish!
Alexander Genis: Yes, the heiress of Nekrasov. You know, these verses are so rhetorical that it’s hard to say something about them. Moreover, it is not clear who, in fact, continued the case of the Decembrists?
Solomon Volkov: She numbers herself among the successors in this case.
Alexander Genis: The same Rozanov, who really did not like the Decembrists, said: they pull this comedy that is a generation. In order to understand how the theme of the Decembrists decided at that time, I want to read another poem. And after all, it was not by chance that this plot surfaced then: the Decembrists are a myth of Russian freedom. This is what we had instead of the French revolution, the maximum approach to a certain Russian liberal spirit, and attempts to liberate.
Solomon Volkov: The spirit of freedom and feat in the name of freedom.
Alexander Genis: Absolutely. This is what generations of schoolchildren lived, including in tsarist Russia, that is, it was a myth.
Solomon Volkov: Moreover, not only the very unsuccessful uprising of the heroic in Palace Square, but also the myth of the further suffering of these people. Rudniki, all these poems by Pushkin, addressed to the Decembrists.
Alexander Genis: "In the depths of Siberian ores."
Solomon Volkov: This is the feat of the wives of the Decembrists who went after them.
Alexander Genis: a feat of children who grew up in this Siberia by educated and noble nobles. All this is absolutely wonderful, except that it is not clear how to associate it with the monstrous October Revolution. It was very difficult to understand to those people who finally waited for the coup. Aksenov said about this: imagine how Chernyshevsky lived to the Soviet regime and actually saw what he was striving for, what he called for. At the same time, in our era, which we recall, the poem "Decembrist" was written, the famous poem of Osip Mandelstam. It turns out such a dialogue between two very unequal poets.
This is evidence of the pagan Senate, -
"These things do not die"
He smoked a chubuk and smelled a bathrobe,
And they play chess nearby.
He exchanged an ambitious dream for a log house
In the deaf tract of Siberia,
And the elaborate chubuk at the poisonous lips,
Telling the truth in the mournful world.
The first time the German oaks were noisy,
Europe cried in the Tenets,
Black quadriga got on its hind legs
On triumphal turns.
It used to be blue in glasses of punch.
With a wide noise of a samovar
Rhinskaya friend quietly says
Free -loving guitar.
Live voices still worry
About the sweet liberty of citizenship,
But the blind heaven does not want victims,
Rather, labor and constancy.
Everything is messed up, and there is no one to say
That, gradually cold,
Everything is messed up, and it is sweet to repeat:
Russia, summer, Lorelei.
Solomon Volkov: I think that the last lines were written by him from the very beginning, and the rest of the poem is attached to this finale.
Alexander Genis: Mandelstam has such a manner: to make one line the main one, this is the grain from which the rest grows. For example, "insomnia. Homer. Turn sails." I am sure that this line came first, it was the main one, the rest “falls” from the first line. And here it may be the main line - the last.
There is a wonderful story about these three words. Kataev in the "Travel of oblivion" describes the following episode: Mandelstam and Mayakovsky accidentally met in a store. Mandelstam orders two cakes and one hundred grams of cheese, and Mayakovsky says: "Give a stick of sausages, two kilo of cheese, six bottles of champagne."
