Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch complain to Putin about Kadyrov

International human rights organizations Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Front Line Defenders wrote an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In it, they asked him to condemn the statements of the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov.

According to the authors of the letter, Kadyrov's recent statements about banning human rights activists from visiting Chechnya suggest an intention to commit illegal actions. The region, the letter notes, is a subject of the Russian Federation, and Russia's international obligations in the field of human rights apply to its territory.

“We ask that all necessary measures be taken to ensure that any statements and actions that contradict Russia’s domestic legislation and international obligations entail the consequences provided for by law,” the appeal says.

The authors of the letter also ask Putin to facilitate the speedy release of Oyub Titiev .

• On August 22, Kadyrov announced that after the end of Titiev's trial, entry into Chechnya would be closed to human rights activists, and the region would become "a forbidden territory for them, just like for terrorists and extremists." The head of the republic expressed the opinion that human rights activists "are interfering with the life of the Chechen people."
