Boba Dilan was translated so little and chaotic in our country that it is considered to understand why he is considered a great poet and for which he received a Nobel, it is strongly impossible. You turn on any of the early albums - clear, great. You start reading in English-and with some knowledge of the language there are also no questions. And in Russian in no way.
Actually, the Russian Dylan exists, although this is difficult to call translations. It was created in the early eighties two author - Boris Grebenshchikov and Mike Naumenko. I leaf the Dylanovsky “100 songs and portraits” (Palmyra, 2018) and run into familiar phrases. Only A Pawn in Their Game is the Grebenshchikovskaya “You are only a pawn in their game” (compare with the clumsmate of Yuri Burkin from anthology: “He is only a pawn in the game”). IT S Alright Ma I M only Bleeding - this is “everything is in order, I just opened old wounds” T -shirt.

There is a beautiful legend about how they translated the Dylanov Deslation Row, an 11-minute surreal fabric. One turned out to be “County City N”, the other has a “room devoid of mirrors”. Both that and that is already a classic, but between them - nothing in common. “My friend Lensky lamented at the beer stall that the liter is so small,” the BG sings. “Leo Tolstoy climbed into the pit and refused to flatly crawl out. He reproaches everyone from there in such words that it is embarrassing to repeat them, ”Mike sings. All this has nothing to do with the original, but the Dylanian spirit is passed as well as possible. If Dylan lived in Russia, this is what would write.
The main conceptual decision was made by the rowers, with this, in fact, the Russian rock began: “Dylan sings about his affairs, and we must about our own, it is ridiculous to pretend that you live in Greenwich Villidge.”
Dylan from Hatsapetovka. Only this is possible in Russian, and in direct translation all charm dies.
This was felt by the compilers of “100 songs”, inviting Dilan not only poets (Igor Belov, Maria Galina, Arkady Shtypel, Vladimir Gubailovsky, Daria Sukhovy, and others), but also existing musicians: Umku, Psoy Korolenko, Vasya Vasina from “bricks”, Zhenya Kupriyanov from Barto, Maxim Kucherienko from “Underwood”, Sil from “Exit”. The musicians in this competition won the poets with a devastating score. Because they did not translate, but transferred to the voice, and to their own.
Here, for example, the main anti-war song of the 1960s Blowin` in the Wind in the version of the Umki is “Question of backfill”:
Tell me, tell me, my best brother,
Do you know when
The World Militical Committee will forget
Eat people without a trace?
When they forget to shoot each other
Christ, Moses, Magomet?
Only the wind can know this answer,
Only the wind knows the answer.
But Maxim Kucherenko from Underwood: “It lives safe in prison, / The wall filters the evil world. / I will close my eyes, I often see / Kazbek, Ai-Petri and Pamir ”(I Shall BE Release). Dilan did not and could not have Kazbek with a Pamir, but it sounds good in Russian and conveys the spirit of the original. These are Russian poems, not tracing paper.
Dylan sings - as we say, and this is his strength. The breath is free and natural as the wind. He does not have a complex of a professional writer: I am a poet and engage in art. No, we just talk and nothing more. Yes, from time to time in its extremely realistic texts there are the names of ancient gods, biblical saints, characters of old and new myths. It is as if Shufutinsky quoted Derzhavin or Willy Tokarev - Mandelstam. But his gods are completely earthly, no different from the seller of cigarettes at the intersection and waitresses from the bar. And we, the will of Dylan, become a briefly for a while.
That's why the great. But in order to feel this, it is not enough to translate. It is necessary to write in Russian again.
