China has launched a platform to help people complain about “online rumors.” this reports Reuters . The platform will also disseminate “authentic” news sourced from state-run media.

The platform is called Piyao, which translates to “refuting gossip.” Using artificial intelligence technology, it identifies messages as false. According to the Chinese authorities, such content is socially destabilizing, the agency clarifies. The new service has a mobile application, accounts on social networks and instant messengers, including Weibo and WeChat, popular in China.

“Rumors violate individual rights, rumors create panic in society, rumors cause fluctuations in stock markets, rumors affect the normal operation of business,” the Piyao launch video states.

The service was launched by the Central Cyberspace Commission of China together with the Xinhua state agency. It united about 40 similar platforms.
