A subway station destroyed on September 11, 2001 has been reopened in New York.

The New York City Subway station, World Trade Center-Kortlandt, was opened on the eve of the seventeenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Located under the twin towers of the World Trade Center, it was badly damaged after their collapse. According to Sky News, the tunnels, tracks and outer walls of the station were destroyed.

The station is fully accessible for the disabled, the new version reduces the number of columns that impede the passage of passengers. At the same time, the previous design with two side platforms was retained. The authorities also decided to keep the old name of the station.

• Restoration of the station began in 2015 at a cost of $182 million. Its walls are decorated with mosaics with excerpts from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948 by the UN General Assembly, as well as from the US Declaration of Independence.
• As a result of the September 11 attacks, when two planes crashed into the buildings of the World Trade Center, about 3 thousand people died. One of the entrances to the Kortlandt station was located under a staircase, called the Stairs of the Survivors, because many people were evacuated from the WTC building along it.
