The Federal Penitentiary Service has begun an experiment with separating those accused of economic crimes from other arrestees

In Moscow, an experiment has begun on the separate detention of citizens suspected and accused of economic crimes from those accused of committing crimes of a non-economic nature, according to a message on the website of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

“Upon admission to the pre-trial detention center, this category of citizens is distributed to cells located in separate blocks or separate buildings of the pre-trial detention center,” the Federal Penitentiary Service explained, adding that such a measure excludes contacts with “other persons.”

Earlier, Boris Titov, authorized under the President of Russia to protect the rights of entrepreneurs, suggested that the Federal Penitentiary Service allocate separate blocks in Russian prisons for prisoners on economic crimes.

“And it’s always harder for business to be in prison, especially in a colony, not even in a pre-trial detention center,” Titov said. He also proposed creating prisons for those convicted of economic crimes, but the FSIN called this idea impossible.
