75 years ago, on September 12, 1943, German paratroopers under the command of Otto Skorzeny released Benito Mussolini from prison, who was under arrest at the Campo Imperatore Hotel in the Gran Sasso mountains. The Germans landed there in landing gliders. The Italian guard offered no resistance. Mussolini and Skorzeny were evacuated in a light aircraft. For the release of Mussolini, Skorzeny was awarded the Knight's Cross.
