The European Parliament adopted an appeal to the European Union Council on a systematic violation of human rights in Hungary. This was reported on the website of the European legislative body.
The appeal was accepted by 448 votes against 197 under 48 abstained.
As noted, this is the first precedent when the European Union opens this way against one of the member countries.
Claims of the EP caused a number of aspects of the internal policy of Hungary. This is the functioning of the constitutional and electoral systems, violation of the principle of independence of ships, corruption and conflicts of interest in power structures, insufficient ensuring the safety of personal data, encroachment on freedom of expression, religion, assembly and academic freedom, violation of the equality of citizens, as well as minority rights, including gypsies and Jews, violation of the basic, economic and social rights of migrants and migrants and migrants and social rights of migrants and migrants and social rights Refugees, including political emigrants.
The circulation project was prepared by the Dutch deputy from the Green - European Free Alliance Judit Sargentini. She emphasized: “We are defending the rights of all Europeans, including Hungarian citizens, and we protect our European values. Now the European leaders are responsible to observe from the outside how the rule of law is destroyed in Hungary. This is unacceptable for the European Union, which is based on the principles of democracy, the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights.”
The appeal of the European Parliament will be sent to the authorities of the EU members. It should be approved by four fifth member countries - then the European Union Council with the consent of the European Parliament hears Budapest's report. Member countries can also make another decision, limiting themselves to the sending of Hungary of recommendations.
In the future, the EU Council can state a systematic and serious violation of the principles of the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights. Such a decision should be made unanimously and with the approval of the European Parliament. In the case of its adoption, Hungary is threatened with sanctions, such as the temporary deprivation of the right of vote in the Council of the European Union.
