Krasnodar has become the 16th million-plus city in Russia, according to the city administration website. The corresponding symbolic certificate was presented to the city mayor Evgeny Pervyshov at a festive event on the occasion of the 225th anniversary of Krasnodar by the head of the regional department of Rosstat, Tatyana Kurnyakova.

According to Pervyshov, Krasnodar has been seeking recognition of this status for several years. “It’s nice that this happened on City Day and Krasnodar officially became the 16th million-plus city in Russia,” said the mayor.

According to Rosstat, as of January 1 of this year, lived 990,203 people in Krasnodar. In general, the population of the Krasnodar Territory is more than 5.6 million people. Krasnodar is the leader in population in the region.

Other million-plus cities in Russia are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Ufa, Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Voronezh, Volgograd.
