President of Turin Juventus Andrea Agnelli, in an interview with Football Italia, lifted the veil of secrecy over the plans of the European Football Union (UEFA) to reform the Europa League.
"We are working on introducing a third tournament with UEFA. The clubs really wanted to have more chances to participate in European competitions during the season. We are also looking at the possibility of reducing the number of teams in the Europa League from 48 to 32," Agnelli was quoted as saying by Match TV"
The functionary complained about the inequality between clubs from Spain, England and Germany and the rest of the world. According to him, a third of the income comes from the 12 richest teams in the world.
"We have to think about what kind of football we want to leave for our children. In the 70s and 80s, teams like Ajax and Benfica won the European Cup. Now it is difficult to see them at the top because huge economic disparity between them and clubs from Spain, England and Germany.
Earlier, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said that the organization was not considering the option of creating a new , third most important European Cup.
It is expected that it will be similar to the previous Cup Winners' Cup. The winners of national cup tournaments participated in the draws for this trophy, the last of which took place in 1999.
