European Football Championship 2024 will be held in Germany

Germany on Thursday was chosen by the venue for the European Football Championship 2024 during the vote at the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

Germany had previously held three major international tournaments - two world championships (1974, 2006) and the European Championship (1988).

Türkiye also claimed to hold the continent championship, which scored three times less votes in the elections. There were no other pre-premises on Euro 2024.

Based on the results of the vote, 12 members of the executive committee preferred to give to the Germany tournament, four more Turkey. One abstained.

“Two large football countries fought for the euro, but, unfortunately, only one can accept the tournament. Germany will be the venue for the European Championship in 2024,” said UEFA President Alexander Cheferin, opening an envelope with a voting winner card.

In the application for Euro 2024, stadiums in ten cities were proposed-in Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Leipzig and Frankfurt.

Türkiye previously fought for the right to hold the European Championship in 2008 (together with Greece), 2012 and 2016, but in all cases the preferences were given to other candidates.

The last time the European Championship was held in France in 2016. In 2020, the tournament will be held for the first time on the territory of 12 countries at once, including Russia (St. Petersburg).
