The US Senate recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine as genocide

The US Senate unanimously recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. The corresponding resolution was published on the website of the upper chamber.

In the resolution, the Senate agreed with the arguments of a special commission established in 1985 to investigate the circumstances of the death of Ukrainians during the Holodomor. In particular, in 1988, the commission concluded that "Joseph Stalin and his entourage committed the genocide of Ukrainians in 1932–1933."

The Embassy of Ukraine in the United States also reported on Facebook that a draft of a similar resolution was also approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives and is now awaiting consideration during the plenary session.

The resolution adopted by the Senate is the first legal act in the history of the Congress recognizing the Holodomor as genocide. Previously, the relevant acts were adopted by individual states - in July, as noted by the Ukrainian embassy, ​​Ohio became the 12th. In addition to him, it is also Washington, New York, Illinois and others.

The Senate made its statement in honor of the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor celebrated in 2017-2018 - a massive famine in the Ukrainian SSR in 1932-1933, which, according to various estimates, killed from 2 to 10 million people.

In 2006, Ukraine passed a law officially recognizing the Holodomor as an act of genocide directed against the Ukrainian people. In 2017, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko proposed to introduce responsibility for denying the Holodomor. “Not recognizing the Holodomor is as immoral as denying the Holocaust,” he told the 112 Ukraine TV channel.

The Russian authorities do not recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Thus, reacting to the initiative of the Israeli parliament, the Russian embassy urged not to consider the famine in Ukraine separately from the famine in other regions of the USSR. The famine in the 1930s "became a common tragedy for Russians, Ukrainians, Kazakhs and other Soviet peoples, the country's largest humanitarian catastrophe," the said in a statement.
