Levchenko initiates the return of direct elections of the mayor of Irkutsk

The Governor of the Irkutsk Region Sergey Levchenko introduced a draft law to the register on the return of direct elections of the mayor of Irkutsk to the register.

“I made the initiative in direct elections the day before with the Legislative Assembly. We conducted a sociological survey: more than 80% of the Irkutsk people voted for this, ”the governor said to reporters (quote for Interfax).

According to Levchenko, he advocates that in all cities of the region, mayors be elected by direct popular voting, and not from the composition of the city thought.

Direct elections in the mayor of Irkutsk were canceled in 2015. Now the mayor of Irkutsk is elected by the city Duma from its composition. The first mayor, chosen in this way, is the current mayor Dmitry Berdnikov.

In April 2017, the governor announced his intention to return the direct elections of the mayor of Irkutsk. In May of that year, the Communists faction in the Legislative Assembly developed the appropriate bill, and when he did not receive the support of the deputies, she tried to bring the issue to the regional referendum.
