The ECHR awarded compensation of 7.5 thousand euros to two people detained on Bolotnaya Square

The European Court of Human Rights awarded Alexander Gromov and Vyacheslav Aristov, two detainees at a rally on Bolotnaya Square in 2012, 7.5 thousand euros in compensation. The decision is published on the website of the ECtHR.

In 2012, both were fined 700 rubles under the article on disobedience to the police (part 19, article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). According to the ECtHR, Russia violated paragraph 1 of Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights (protection of personal freedom), paragraph 1 of Article 6 (the right to a fair trial) and Article 11 (the right to freedom of assembly).

• On May 6, 2012, an opposition rally agreed with the Moscow authorities on Bolotnaya Square escalated into clashes between demonstrators and the police. As a result, more than 400 people were detained. On the same day, a criminal case was initiated under Article 212 (calls for mass riots) and Article 318 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (use of violence against a representative of authority).
