Exit polls: Irish vote to remove blasphemy from constitution

In a referendum in Ireland, 71% of voters voted to remove the concept of blasphemy from the constitution, according to exit poll data.

Official results will be announced later on Saturday.

Polls also showed that the country's incumbent President Michael Higgins will be re-elected for a second term.

• In 2015, a blasphemy case was brought against actor Stephen Fry in Ireland; the case was dismissed two years later due to "no aggrieved party". The last full blasphemy trial in Ireland took place in 1855 (under British law).
• In May 2018, Ireland held a referendum on relaxing anti-abortion laws. Two-thirds of voters voted in favor of the initiative.
