Putin proposed returning the name GRU to military intelligence

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to return the name of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

Now military intelligence is officially called the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

“It’s not clear where the word ‘intelligence’ has disappeared – the Main Intelligence Directorate should be restored,” Putin said, congratulating military intelligence officers on their professional holiday, which is celebrated on November 5.

• The GRU was renamed the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces in 2010 as part of the ongoing reform of the Ministry of Defense. However, both in Russia and abroad, Russian military intelligence is still referred to as the GRU.
• In 2018, Russian military intelligence is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
