In the second part of this issue: Vilnius poets and translators about the craft of translation and “my favorite records” with the Ukrainian singer Sonya Sotnik.
Nikolai Leskov in the music of Rodion Shchedrin. Transfer from the cycle "Writers and Music". The author of the cycle Vladimir Abarinov:
Nikolai Leskov was a heavy man, biliary, “evil”, as he called himself. When asked whether he loves music, he once answered: “No ... I don’t like it: I think a lot to the music ... but my thoughts are all heavy ...”
But it was in the prose of Leskov that the young Shostakovich drew inspiration, who wrote the most piercing Russian opera of the twentieth century - "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk district." There is another composer who calls Leskova his beloved Russian writer. This is Rodion Shchedrin. Shchedrin wrote several large vocal works on Leskov. One of them is the “captured angel”.
For Leskov, this is a story about how the authorities confiscated their icons at the artel, and the main shrine of Stroganov’s letter also ruined. This icon portrayed the guardian angel.
This angel truly was something indescribable. His face, as I see now, is the most lightly and sort of sudden; The gaze is touched; ears with toros, as a sign of the widespread dump of hearing; The blanket is on, the rows of golden is re -appropriate; armor is feathered, Ramena is presented; on Persia, the infant face of Emanuilev; In the right hand, the cross, in the left flammable sword. Wild! marvelous! .. Vlas on the head is curled and the Russians, from the ears they rejected and a hair was drawn to the hair with a needle. The wings are extensive and white like snow, and the lazul is light, the pen, the pen to the pen, and in each beard of the pen of Usyk to the Usyk. You look at these wings, and where your whole fear will go: you pray “autumn”, and now you are all out, and the world will become in your soul. That was what an icon!
This angel barbarously sealed the face with a sustainer. But the Old Believers managed to help him out of trouble, replaced the icon, and the Bogomaz managed to remove the wax from the angelic face, which still shone.
Rodion Shchedrin designated the genre of his composition as follows: "The Russian Liturgy for the A Capella choir with a purellings." From the story of Leskov, there was only one line in it, and that redone: “The angel of the Lord, may your feet be shed as you want!” So the schismatics at Leskov pray to their angel. Neither the Old Believers nor the Nikonians have such prayer. It is not even clear what these words mean. “I also want” - “wherever you want” in Church Slavonic. But why will the feet “shed”? Shchedrin replaced the “feet” with “tears”. All other parts of Shchedrin's essays are written on well -known liturgical texts. Here is the third part - the so -called suicide of the Assumption.
Angels, the Assumption of Most Holy Seeing, was surprised: what a virgin rises from the ground to heaven ...
And another part of the composition of Rodion Shchedrin, the sixth: "Repentance, open the door, lively." Translated to modern Russian, this prayer sounds like this:
Zhiznodovets! Open me the doors of repentance, for my soul from early morning strives for your holy temple, since its bodily temple is defiled; But you, as generous, cleanse him by your immense mercy.
Now - a completely different genre, the Opera Leo -Levha.

Perhaps nowadays, Leskovo is most often judged by this farce, and in its distorted interpretations. From these interpretations, it turns out that the Tula master Levsha wiped his nose to the British, heanked the flea. He knocked it out, but only she could not dance Danes and throw out probabilities as before.
"Please look into a small -way." "Leo". Script and production of Ivan Ivanov-Vano. The text is read by Dmitry Zhuravlev. Soyuzmultfilm, 1964.
But on the other hand, she sings at Shchedrin. This Russified flea, as it were, only learns the Russian language, so sings the letters of the Russian alphabet.
Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich sent a saved flea and a left -hander with her to England to surprise the British. The British were surprised at the work and began to lure the left -handed man, who, as it turned out, did not study anything.
- Our science is simple: according to the psalter and a half -car, but we do not know arithmetic.
They say:
- It’s a pity, it would be better if you knew from arithmetic at least four rules of addition, then you would be much more beneficial than the whole half -car. Then you could figure out that in each machine there is a calculation of strength, and then the hosha you are very skilled in your hands, and did not realize that such a small machine, as in nymphosoria, is designed for the most accurate accuracy and there can be no subside of its horseshoes. Through this now nymphosoria does not jump and Danes does not dance.
Levsha agreed.
“About this,” he says, “there is no dispute that we did not come in the sciences, but only devotees are true to our fatherland.
And the British tell him:
- Stay with us, we will give you great education, and the amazing master will come out of you. You, - they say, - getting, we will accept our law, and we will marry you.

In this place, in Soviet adaptations of left -handed, a bill was usually made, and at the present time, left -handed response sounds no worse than that of the note of Russian patriots.
“This,” answered Levsha, “can never be.”
- Why so?
“Because,” he answers, “that our Russian faith is the most correct, and as our Nights believed, the descendants should also believe.”
“You,” the British say, “do not know our faith: we contain the same Christian law and the same gospel.”
“The Gospel,” the Lefty replies, “really all has one, but only our books against your thicker, and we have more faith .
The English bride leftist was also not seduced, although the British told him:
You do not neglect: ours also dress very purely and household.
Upon his return from England, a left -handed hospital died in the Obukhov hospital, “where they take everyone to die an unknown class”, but where they buried it, Leskov does not even write about it. In the finale of the opera, Shchedrin cries a flea on him and people of a simple rank pray.
We heard a fragment of the Radio Prosseus “Left” in the production of Mikhail Yanshin with the participation of Igor Kozlov in the role of a left -handed person, a 1956 record. The Liturgy of Rodion Shchedrin “Implemented Angel” was performed by the Moscow State Academic Chamber Choir under the direction of Vladimir Minin. Soloists: Lolita Semenina, Natalya Belova, Tatyana Zhdanova, Alexey Alekseev, Andrei Azovsky, Alexander Illarionov, Flate - Alexander Kholyshev. 1988 entry.
