The current composition of the US Congress may not have time with the adoption of new laws on anti -Russian sanctions. It is reported by Bloomberg with reference to key senators.
Until the end of this year, congressmen will be occupied by bills on limiting government spending and drugs, as well as the appointment of judges.
Meanwhile, already in January, the new composition of the House of Representatives began work, the majority in which democrats received according to the results of the November Roting Elections. In addition, the composition of the Senate is updated - out of 100 of it, 35 of it will be new.
Another circumstance that can slow down the adoption of new sanctions is the lack of large -scale intervention of Russia in the current elections. As the chairman of the Senate Committee on International Relations, Republican Bob Corker, the adoption of the law supported by him to protect the elections from threats in such conditions will be inappropriate.
The Senator from New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendes, one of the authors of the sanctions bill introduced in August, confirmed that Congress is likely not enough time to accept it this year. “We haven’t had a lot of time left,” Republican John Cornin, in turn, remarked, in turn. “This will be a real race, unless everyone wants to stay here for Christmas.”
According to two sources of Bloomberg, in September, senators who prepared sanctions laws gave assistants to the instructions to speed up the work. Until the November elections, the US Ministry of Finance almost daily provided assistants to the members of the Congress "Technical Assistance" in the preparation of laws.
The Law on the Protection of the Elections from the Threats (Deter Act) was submitted to the Congress in January by the Senate by Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Chris van Hollen. He suggests that sanctions are introduced automatically, without the approval of the White House, within 10 days after the director of national intelligence accuses a particular foreign state of interfering in the election process.
Penalty measures according to the bill are introduced against key sectors of the Russian economy, such as the financial sphere, energy, military industry, metallurgy and mining industry. The document also provides for personal sanctions against the largest Russian officials and oligarchs.
On August 3, a group of American senators from both parties introduced a bill "On the Protection of American Security from the Kremlin aggression", which provides for the assessment of personal assets of Vladimir Putin, the possibility of including Russia in the list of sponsors of terrorism, a ban on the operation of Russian state banks in the United States and restrictions on the purchase of Russian bonds.
