French director Jean-Luc Godard refused to visit Russia, citing the imprisonment of his colleague, cinematographer Oleg Sentsov, reports Agence France-Presse .
The agency refers to a statement published by the Society of French Film Directors. Godard considered that he “had no right” to visit Russia due to the conditions of Sentsov’s imprisonment, despite his attitude towards the Russians.
Jean-Luc Godard is a French director, he is known as one of the ideologists of the French “new wave”.
Oleg Sentsov is a Ukrainian director who was arrested on terrorism charges after the annexation of Crimea by Russia and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Godard signed a letter calling for his release.
