- You have a candidate degree in art criticism. When you came up with this car, you were inspired by any works?
- No. I have been doing passenger trains for many years. My diploma project was dedicated to train design - I studied in Stroganovka at the Department of District of Vehicles. My friends were mostly fond of cars, and I, maybe the only country in the country - defended the dissertation for the design of the train. My work was noticed-and so it went.
- How did you learn about the contest for the design of the reserved seat car?
- But there was no competition. Nobody except our studio is engaged in train design.
- That is, all new trains we are traveling to - are you yours?
- No. In Russia there are imported trains, and there are Russian production. For example, the "Swallow" is Siemens, "Sapsan" too. The Allegro train, which travels between St. Petersburg and Helsinki, Italian. The design of some of our trains was also ordered abroad: for example, two -story cars of the Tver plant were drawn in Italy.
“But they gave the reserved sector to you.”
- It happens that the customer loves to work with foreign companies because they have a name. But I know from the designers who were then engaged in such designs that their experience was specific. They say that it is difficult for foreigners to understand our mentality.

- What happened in the terms of reference that you received from the Russian Railways? What were you asked for?
- We were guided by the opinion of passengers. The Russian Railways company already had a large list of requirements; We also studied social networks ourselves.
- And what did the passengers want?
- One of the main requirements is personal space. A curtain that can be fenced off. In general, if you type in the “Google” or “Yandex” “reservoir” - there are many memes, a huge amount of information. The analysis of social networks is simply necessary for designers today - from there you will learn what you will never receive in an interview. It was interesting to watch photos: how people take the sheets on which they should sleep, and hang the whole car. It looks like a Chinese quarter in which linen is dried, and people are just trying to fence themselves off and sleep on striped mattresses.
The second thing the passenger wanted was the changing tables in the toilet. We also complained about the inconvenience of shelves and stairs. We tried to modernize all this.
- But there were no requirements about the length of the shelves? Usually people complain that they cannot stretch out in full growth. Do you have cracks in your project in a wooden fence in the end of the shelf - is it for the legs?
- On the Internet there is a joke on this subject: “Why are the shelves so short? Because the passage is needed. ” We are driven - we have the dimensions of the car for which we cannot go out. As for the holes that you are talking about, they are not for the legs, they are for hands. They are needed to climb onto the upper shelf.

- And if I'm two meters tall - what to do?
- The length of the shelf is 1650 millimeters ( in the compartment - 1850 - approx. "Medusa" ). A two -meter person there still will not lie normally. But we did something. There is now a protective handrail on the sleeping shelf, which can be folded. It is located in the middle of the shelf and interferes with the knees. Many fold it under the mattress, go without protection and sometimes fall. What did we do? Another side. It is a loop that protects the upper body, and the knees area are open. And you can sleep with bent knees in safety.
-There wasan idea to make a capsules bed. Why did they refuse her?
- You can drive in capsules for several hours, for example at night. But to go in a capsule for long distances, for two days, for example, this is impossible. You can’t straighten up there, sit normally - only a lying and reclining condition. And here you can talk with passengers - if they are friendly and adequate. And somehow it is more positive to spend time.
“Did you come up with something so that the snoring of the neighbors does not interfere with so much?”
- This is a question for representatives of the medical industry. Snoring is a problem of doctors, not designers. Of course, you can make the capsule absolutely sealed, but I think that many have claustrophobia in one form or another. It will not be comfortable to go in a capsule, where nothing is heard, nothing is visible.
- I would be happy to ride this before Vladivostok.
- extreme.
- How did you accept your project?
- The reviews are mostly positive. People wrote yesterday that it turned out beautifully, but worried whether they would be higher than the ticket prices, whether this project would be sent to the table. The cherry on the cake - in the evening our project was in the "Evening Urgant", and there Ivan Hlestko joked about the fact that it is difficult to imagine the paratroopers transported in this car.
-When you handed over the project, you had to change something? Railways somehow corrected your design?
- I didn’t have to change anything significant, only the nuances. For example, the height of the hook for clothing, the brightness of the lamp.
- How much time did this project take?
- On a sketch - a month, and the implementation continues to this day. That is, about six months.
- Do you have your own favorite story about a reserved seat car? Maybe something connected with the first love? Or how was vodka poured all over the car?
-The reserved seat somehow passed me-with the exception of several school excursions. Therefore, the design for me was doubly difficult task - I still had to plunge into this world, feel it.
- How could the reserved seat be over?!
-It somehow happened.
-Do you feel some importance of the moment? The reserved seat is the most folk car, and you change its appearance.
- I felt when I woke up on Monday morning and saw what was happening on the Internet. In Yandex, this news hung in the first place for half a day. It would seem that just a car, but for people it turned out to be so important!
- Do you think in your carriage people will be able to eat fried chicken and boiled eggs at a common table?
- Yes. The main thing is not to wipe your hands on the curtain. This is the biggest problem for all carriers.
