The second game of the final match of the World Chess Championship between Chinese Ju Wenjun and Russian Ekaterina Lagno took place in Khanty-Mansiysk.
Catherine had white pieces. The opponents played the Catalan opening, where queens were swapped early in the game. White temporarily sacrificed a pawn, but in return received the advantage of two bishops. Soon White won back the material, but they had to give up a bishop for a knight, after which an endgame with rooks and opposite-colored bishops appeared on the board.
White's position was somewhat preferable due to the better pawn structure and more active placement of the pieces. After exchanging a pair of rooks, Ekaterina gradually made a pawn breakthrough on the king's side, after which the Chinese chess player had to hold the line on both sides of the board.
White managed to win a pawn with precise play, and then the opponent's mistakes allowed Ekaterina Lagno to achieve a decisive advantage. On the 59th move, Black admitted defeat. The Russian chess player took the lead: 1.5:0.5 in favor of Ekaterina Lagno. The third game will be played on Wednesday, November 21st. Ju Wenjun will play the white pieces.
The final match consists of four games with classical control. The winner is the chess player who scores 2.5 or more points. In case of a draw after the main part of the match, a tie-break is played, reminds ruchess.ru .
As a member of the Russian national team, Ekaterina won the European Team Championship in 2017. Lagno received Russian citizenship in the summer of 2014 .
