As a result of the breach of Marriott International's customer base, the data of up to 500 million guests was leaked, the company said .
What's happened. Hackers broke into the computer system of Starwood (part of Marriott International). Starwood operates Sheraton, St. Regis, Le Méridien, W Hotels, Four Points by Sheraton and others.
The hackers had at their disposal data on customers who booked rooms up to September 10, 2018.
It was possible to detect a hack using an internal security notification.
Marriott apologized. “We deeply regret that this happened. Marriott has reported the incident to law enforcement and continues to cooperate with their investigation,” the company said.
Context. This is the largest user identity theft since 2013. Then Yahoo leaked information about 3 billion users.
