Russian President Vladimir Putin clarified the incident in the Kerch Strait during a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron as part of the G20 summit.
According to presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin clearly demonstrated the situation by drawing a diagram.
The media later reported that Merkel expressed a desire to help resolve the conflict. However, as Peskov said, we are not talking about any mediation by Germany.
“The word “mediation” has not been uttered, and it is hardly possible. Because here we are talking about the violation of the state border, about the trial, about the investigative actions that are being carried out against violators, ”the spokesman said (quote from Interfax).
The summit also touched upon the release of Ukrainian sailors. Putin explained that it is necessary to wait for the end of the investigation and the decision of the court.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump canceled a meeting with Putin. The American leader explained his decision by the fact that Ukrainian sailors and ships did not return to Ukraine after the incident in the Sea of Azov. Later, the US authorities offered Russia to continue the cooperation of both sides.
On November 25, in the Kerch Strait, the Russian border service fired on and detained three Ukrainian warships heading from Odessa to Mariupol. As a result, 24 Ukrainian sailors were detained. All of them were arrested until January 25th.
According to Russia, the ships illegally crossed the border, because Ukraine had not previously applied for the passage of ships. Kyiv claims that it sent requests, but did not receive a response to them. Later, the Ukrainian authorities banned Russian men aged 16 to 60 from entering the country for 30 days.
