The ECHR awarded 7,500 euros to the participants of the March of Millions, who were fined 500 rubles

The European Court of Human Rights ordered Russia to pay 7,500 euros in compensation to Andrei Asainov and Maria Sibiryak, who were fined 500 rubles for disobeying the police during the “March of Millions” on Bolotnaya Square. The decision was published on the official website of the court.

The ECHR recognized that the Russian authorities violated Article 6 (the right to a fair trial) and Article 11 (freedom of assembly and association) of the European Convention on Human Rights in relation to Asainov and Sibiryak. Russia is obliged to pay compensation to the victims within three months. Asainov’s interests in Strasbourg were represented by Konstantin Terekhov and Aleksey Navalny, Maria Sibiryak was defended by the lawyer of the Public Verdict Foundation, Nikolai Zboroshenko, who announced on Facebook that the decision had come into force.

The case of Maria Sibiark and Andrey Asainov is part of the general group of cases “Frumkin and Others v. the Russian Federation”, which were submitted to the ECHR in connection with detentions and fines after the “March of Millions” action on May 6, 2012. Sibiryak and Asainov were detained on Bolotnaya Square that day and taken to the police departments, where protocols were drawn up under Article 19.3 (disobedience to a police officer). In court district No. 100 of the Yakimanka district, they were fined 500 rubles each, and later the Zamoskvoretsky court approved these decisions.

• In Moscow, on May 6, 2012, a concerted action "March of Millions" was held with a route from Kaluzhskaya Square to Bolotnaya Square, which ended in clashes with the police and mass arrests. According to OVD-Info, more than 650 people were detained in connection with the action . More than 20 people were later arrested and charged with involvement in the riots. Many of them were sentenced to various prison terms.
