The ECHR approved a decision on compensation of 48 thousand euros in favor of Pussy Riot members

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has rejected the request of the Russian government to submit to the Grand Chamber of the European Court a decision on compensation of 48,760 euros to members of Pussy Riot. Now the decision has officially entered into force, and Russia is obliged to comply with it within three months. This was reported by Interfax with reference to the ECtHR.

Then the court ruled that when considering the case of hooliganism due to the Pussy Riot action in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Russian authorities violated several articles of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The court also decided that the punishment for the action in the temple was excessively harsh.

According to the ECHR, in relation to Ekaterina Samutsevich, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, the prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment (Article 3 of the Convention), the right to liberty and security of person (Article 5 of the Convention), the right to a fair trial (Art. 6 of the Convention), the right to freedom of expression (Article 10 of the Convention).

According to the decision of the ECHR, Russia is obliged to pay Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina 16 thousand euros each, Ekaterina Samutsevich - 5 thousand euros. In addition, the Russian authorities were ordered to pay 11,750 euros in compensation for legal costs and expenses.

• At the end of February 2012, in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, five members of the Pussy Riot group staged a punk prayer service, after which they posted a video on the Internet. The police arrested three protesters - Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich. On August 17, 2012, the group members were found guilty of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred and sentenced to two years in a penal colony. On October 10, by decision of the appellate instance, Samutsevich was changed to a suspended sentence.
• On December 23, 2013, two months before the end of their sentence, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were released under an amnesty adopted by the State Duma on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution.
