Moscow City Court Reduces Lev Ponomarev's Arrest to 16 Days
The Moscow City Court has reduced the term of administrative arrest of human rights activist Lev Ponomarev from 25 to 16 days, Mediazona reports.
Judge Anna Seliverstova found the initial punishment to be excessively harsh.
- On December 5, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow placed 77-year-old Lev Ponomarev under administrative arrest for calling for a rally "For our and your children" in defense of the defendants in the "Penza case" and the "New Greatness" case. The uncoordinated rally took place on October 28 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and many of its participants were detained.
- The head of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Fedotov , called the decision to arrest Ponomarev “inexplicable,” Amnesty International demanded the release of the human rights activist, and Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova asked the prosecutor’s office to check the legality of the district court’s decision.
