CDU party chooses new leader to replace Angela Merkel

The Christian Democratic Union has chosen a new chairman. Angela Merkel will be replaced in this post by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the general secretary of the party.

Former Bundestag member Friedrich Merz and Health Minister Jens Spahn also claimed the post of leader. The change of the head of the CDU does not mean an automatic change of Merkel as Chancellor of Germany.

• Merkel announced her resignation as leader of the CDU in October, she did not run for new elections. Before that, the CDU / CSU unsuccessfully performed in regional elections.
• Merkel's fourth term as German Chancellor will end in 2021. She led the party for 18 years.
