Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has become the new chairman of Germany's Christian Democratic Union party, reports Reuters. In this post, she will replace Angela Merkel, who led the party for 18 years.

Before the victory, the 56-year-old Kramp-Karrenbauer was the prime minister of the German state of Saarland, and for the last year she served as general secretary, that is, the head of the apparatus of the CDU.

She is considered a confidant of Merkel.
The politician does not have a special position on the issue of building relations with Russia, which differed seriously from the position of his fellow party members. She proposes to continue to actively use the existing channels of communication with Moscow.
After the incident with the Ukrainian ships, Kramp-Karrenbauer proposed to ban Russian ships based in the Sea of Azov from entering European ports, as well as cut Russian gas supplies through the future Nord Stream pipeline. Context. On October 29 , it became known that German Chancellor Angela Merkel was not going to remain as chairman of the CDU. She also said that her current term as head of government would be her last, after which she did not intend to "hold any political office."

In her last speech as CDU chairman on December 7, Merkel said "the time has come to open a new chapter" and called on democrats to unite.
