FSIN will close Butyrka

The Federal Penitentiary Service has made the final decision to close the Butyrka and Presnya pre-trial detention centers, Deputy Head of the Department Valery Maksimenko said.

Instead of these two insulators, a new one will be built, with five thousand places, which will meet "all European standards."

The vacated buildings will be transferred to the balance of the Moscow City Hall.

• SIZO "Butyrka" is the largest institution for prisoners in Moscow. The first prison on this site was built under Catherine II.
• The leadership of the Federal Penitentiary Service has been talking about the possible closure of Butyrka over the past few years. Among the main reasons were complaints from residents of neighboring houses and the non-compliance of the buildings of the detention center with modern requirements.
