A criminal case was initiated under part one of Article 238 of the Criminal Code (provision of services that do not meet the requirements for the safety of life and health of consumers). According to investigators, over two days, December 16 and 17, 40 local residents, including 19 children, went to Shakhty hospitals. They complained of feeling unwell, dizzy and vomiting. According to Don-TR, on December 18, 42 people were in hospitals , 23 of whom were children.
After hospitalization, the patients were diagnosed with a norovirus infection of the second genotype, which leads to a gastrointestinal infection in the form of acute gastroenteritis. According to the department, the virus was in the water of the central water supply system, which local residents drank and used in everyday life. Rospotrebnadzor previously reported that the poisoning was caused by norovirus.
