In defense of academic ethics

We invite members of the HSE Commission of the same name to a public discussion

On November 8, a meeting of the Commission of the Scientific Council on Academic Ethics was held at our university, at which the statements of Professor Hasan Huseynov were discussed. According to the minutes of the meeting, members of the commission by a majority vote (7 versus 1) recognized the publication of the professor on his Facebook page “having excessive emotional coloring and sometimes insulting”, and also recommended that he apologize.

The decision of the ethical commission causes a number of formal and meaningful issues. The declaration of values ​​of the Higher School of Economics as supporting principles is indicated by openness and honesty. As the rector of our university recently noted , the Higher School of Economics is a democratic university. One of the main elements of the democratic process is the discussion.

Therefore, we offer participants in the commission on academic ethics to hold a public meeting at which their position would be explained in direct discussion with all interested parties - students and teachers of the university, and primarily with Professor Huseynov himself.

For us, the reputation of the Higher School of Economics as an expert instance is very important. Scientific examination should always be open to criticism and public discussion. The discussion will strengthen the ethical values ​​of the university.

We express the hope that the commission on academic ethics will not refuse it.
