The last head of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Anatoly Lukyanov, died on January 9 in Moscow. This was reported by RBC with reference to his daughter Elena Lukyanova.

Anatoly Lukyanov was 88 years old. According to his daughter, he was seriously ill before his death.

Anatoly Lukyanov was born in Smolensk in 1930. He graduated from the law faculty of Moscow State University. In 1984, he was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In March 1990, Lukyanov became the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet, replacing Mikhail Gorbachev, who was elected President of the USSR.
In August 1991, Lukyanov joined the State Emergency Committee, which is why he was arrested after the failed coup . In 1994, he, like other participants in the State Emergency Committee, was amnestied. After that, Lukyanov was elected to the State Duma and was a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
