
The European organization for nuclear research (CERN) introduced the concept of the future ring collider (Future Circular Collider, FCC) - a new large -scale project, which is proposed to be launched after the expiration of the large Adron Collider (BAC) in Geneva. Work on the concept has gone since 2014 with the participation of 1300 scientists from 150 institutions from around the world .
Cern proposes to build a 100-kilometer circular tunnel in the vicinity of Geneva, which will allow you to increase the energy of particles many times and significantly expand the possibilities of research. For comparison, the tunnel of a large adron collader, the largest particle accelerator in the world, has a length of about 27 kilometers.
The tunnel is supposed to be used for several projects. The first-by the 2040s-it is planned to create an electron-positron collider, which will work 15-20 years (the cost of the project, taking into account the construction of the tunnel-nine billion euros). In Cern, they say that this collider will become “a very powerful “ Higgs factory ” ” and will allow “new, rare processes and measure well -known particles with unprecedented accuracy”.
After that, scientists want to launch a new adron collider with an energy of up to 100 teraelectron volts for the clash of protons and heavy ions (BAC Energy - 14 Teraelectronolt). The achievement of such energy will make “accurate research on how Higgs particles interact with each other”, and “a detailed study of the role of a spontaneous violation of symmetry in the history of our Universe”. The creation of this collider will cost, according to scientists, 15 billion euros.
The project is designed for 70 years and, as noted in the CERN, will work for the benefit of physics of elementary particles throughout the 21st century. “Details of the properties of the [bosona of Higgs] are priority for any future particle accelerator. <...> In addition, experimental evidence requires physics outside the standard model to explain such observations as dark matter or the dominance of matter over antimatter, ”said Cern.
A similar project of a collider with a 100-kilometer tunnel exists in China-by 2030 they plan to build there, as in the Tserna project, first an electron-positive accelerator, and then a proton-prototon.
The big adron collider earned in 2008 in a tunnel built for a large electro-positron collider in the 1980s. One of his goals was the discovery of the Higgs boson-particles, the existence of which was predicted in the 1960s. Higgs Bozon was discovered in 2012. The collider is planned to be upgraded and used until 2035.
