The Judicial Collegium for Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court of Kalmykia changed the sentence of two traffic police officers who were sentenced to 3.5 years of suspended imprisonment for beating a driver, according to the website of the regional department of the Investigative Committee.
The board decided that traffic police officers found guilty of exceeding their official authority with the use of violence (clause “a” of part 3 of article 286 of the Criminal Code) should serve the same sentence in a general regime colony.
As the investigation established, on June 10, 2017, in Elista, the defendants in the case stopped a Toyota Corolla car near the Hotel stop. A 37-year-old local resident was driving. The police checked his documents and decided that he was probably driving drunk.
The driver denied this and tried to escape from the traffic police officers. They caught up with him and beat him. As a result, the driver received a closed rib fracture and a superficial contusion wound to the head. After this, the defendants in the case were fired from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
