Two Estonian citizens convicted of spying for Russia

In Estonia, the court sentenced citizens of the country, 38-year-old Denis Metsavas and his 65-year-old father Petr Volin, to imprisonment for spying for Russia.

Metsavas received 15 and a half years in prison, Volin - six years. As established by the investigation and the court, Metsavas passed secret information to the Russian GRU for 10 years, his father got involved in criminal activities five years ago.

According to the Estonian publication Postimees, Volin was also found guilty of two crimes related to the illegal circulation of ammunition.

The case was considered behind closed doors. The verdict has not yet entered into force. Metsavas and Volin have been under arrest since September 2018.

The website of the Estonian broadcasting company ERR reports that Denis Metsavas previously served in the Estonian army. His father served in the border troops in Soviet times.
