De Morgen: the head of Belgian counterintelligence was suspected of spying for Russia

The head of the counterintelligence department of the Belgian Intelligence and Security Service (SGRS), Clement Vanderborre, was suspected of spying for Russia and was removed from his post during the investigation, reports Deutsche Welle , citing the Belgian newspaper De Morgen .

An informed source of the Belgian publication said that, according to investigators, in 2016, during a special operation in Serbia, Vanderborre passed on secret information to a citizen of this country, who was a double agent and worked for Moscow.

In addition, De Morgen reports, Vanderborre is accused of destroying classified documents in an office shredder. He denies all charges.

The newspaper notes that the SGRS has long had “strained relations” with the international intelligence service in which the military works.

In November 2018, an army officer was detained in Austria , who was also suspected of spying for Russia. According to Die Presse, the colonel held an administrative post, so he did not have access to highly classified information. However, he could transmit data about the mood in the armed forces, about the personal qualities of officers and the Minister of Defense. The colonel admitted his guilt, the court refused to arrest him.
