The UN Security Council did not support the Russian resolution on Venezuela. Russia and China vetoed US resolution

The UN Security Council at its meeting on February 28 was unable to adopt either of the two resolutions put to a vote on the situation in Venezuela.

The document proposed by the US was vetoed by Russia and China. This version of the resolution proposed holding fair and free elections in Venezuela with the participation of international observers.

The Russian version of the resolution was supported by only four countries out of 15 members of the Security Council. It emphasized the need to resolve the crisis by the forces of Venezuela itself and the inadmissibility of external interference in what is happening.

• In the ongoing conflict in Venezuela, the United States is backing parliamentary speaker Juan Guaidó, who has declared himself president. Russia expresses support for President Nicolas Maduro and accuses the United States of intending to change power in the country by force.
