The head of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, said that the start of the UK's exit from the European Union could be delayed, according to Reuters.
Tajani noted that the Brexit process could start later than March 29, as planned, but "for a few weeks at the most."
“The biggest mistake of all, a chaotic Brexit with no deal, needs to be avoided now,” he said. According to him, such a process would be a disaster for the British economy and harm the European Union. He also added that he would be happy if the UK remained in the EU.
Tajani believes the Brexit deal could have been clearer, but said the clauses would not be changed.
“I am sure that the [UK] exit date can be delayed by a maximum of a few weeks from late March to early July,” he said, adding that in this case, the UK would have to present reasons for delaying Brexit. “They decided to leave, it’s their problem, not ours,” Tajani said.
Recall that in June 2016, a referendum was held in the UK on leaving the European Union. More than half of its participants (almost 52%) voted "for" leaving. At the end of March 2017, the official Brexit procedure began. It is estimated that the UK will need about two years to leave the EU.
The draft agreement on Brexit proposed to the British parliamentarians was approved by the British government on November 14 last year, and then it was supported by the EU countries. After its discussions in the government, several dissenting ministers resigned .
In January, Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbynnes submitted a no-confidence motion to the British government in Parliament after parliamentarians voted against Prime Minister Theresa May's proposed Brexit deal. However, the British Parliament expressed confidence in the government. Later, he did not support holding Brexit without agreement with the European Union.
