US President Donald Trump intends to ask Congress on Monday, March 11, in 2020, another 8.6 billion dollars for building a wall from migrants on the border with Mexico.
This amount is almost six times higher than the funds that Congress agreed to allocate to the project annually, Reuters reports with reference to sources informed about the presidential draft budget.
The advantage in the House of US representatives is made up of democrats who are sharply against the construction of the wall, so Trump's request will most likely be rejected, the agency notes. The speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and the leader of the democratic minority in the Senate Chuck Schumer on March 10, said in advance that Congress would not agree on this requirement.
"President Trump caused damage to millions of Americans and caused widespread chaos, recklessly suspending the government to try to get money for his expensive and ineffective wall," Peloshi said.
"Congress refused to finance the wall, and Trump was forced to recognize the defeat and resume the government. The same thing would happen to do if he tries to do it again. We hope that he learned the lesson," the statement said in her joint statement with Schumar.
The White House Advisor for Economics Larry Kudlow told Fox News that due to the construction of the wall, the president offers about five percent reduction of all domestic expenses of the country.
Donald Trump asked to allocate $ 5.7 billion in the fiscal year in 2019 for the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico, from where migrant caravans came to the United States, but the Congress approved only 1.3 billion. In response, the American leader suspended the government for 35 days - from December 22 to January 25, this became the longest Shatdown in the history of the United States.
Then Trump introduced a state of emergency on the southern border, which gave him the right to redirect 6.5 billion dollars to the construction of the wall without coordination in addition to the allocated funds.
According to Trump, a wall with a length of 1162 kilometers and worth $ 18 billion is needed to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking. The construction of the wall was one of his election promises. So far, 179 kilometers of the wall have been built, Reuters notes. In 2017, Congress allocated $ 341 million on it, in 2018 - 1.375 billion.
