
Deputies of the Parliament of Kazakhstan approved the change of the name of the Republican capital from Astana to Nursultan, in honor of the first Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev, RIA Novosti reports.
Amendments to the Constitution of the country were two readings without comments.
“A historical decision has been made,” said Nurlan Nigmatulin, speaker of the Mazhilis (lower house) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan.
The new president of Kazakhstan Kasim-Zhomart Tokaev proposed renaming the capital of the Republic of Astana to Nursultan, as well as to name the central streets of all regional capitals in his honor.
Nursultan Nazarbayev the day before, in an appeal to the country's population with a statement of resignation.
