About two thousand participants in a protest against changes to the rules for holding a referendum in Magas refused to disperse after its completion and remained on the square overnight.
The protesters also adopted a resolution demanding the resignation of the head of the republic, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov.
Reinforced security forces are on duty near the square. They told the crowd that their actions were illegal and stopped attempts to pitch tents, but did not take any other active steps to disperse the protesters.
