Insurers reported losses of 200 million euros during the “yellow vest” protests

The damage from the pogroms during the manifestations of the “yellow vests” movement for the period from the beginning of the protests on November 17 last year to March 16 amounted to 200 million euros, reports France Info, citing data from the French Insurance Federation.

Of this amount, 175 million euros were paid to companies to compensate for damage caused during the protests. The remaining 25 million euros were spent on compensation to owners of housing and cars.

Another protest of the "yellow vests" took place on March 23. French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner noted that 40.5 thousand people across the country took part in it, including five thousand in Paris. The publication Le Figaro, citing the police, reported 233 detainees throughout the country.

After the protests began, the French authorities took a number of measures. In particular, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe in December last year announced a six-month moratorium on raising taxes on fuel, gas and electricity tariffs. French President Emmanuel Macron has apologized to citizens and announced a series of measures, including raising the minimum wage and abolishing the tax on overworked hours. However, the protesters continued to demonstrate.

French senators on March 13 tightened the law on the implementation of public order during the protests. The document allows the police to inspect the protesters, feeling them, and open their bags. They are also penalized for hiding their faces under a mask during protests.
