Russian court fines Twitter for first time

Following a complaint from Roskomnadzor, a Russian court has issued a fine to the social network Twitter for the first time, Vedomosti reports. The company is accused of refusing to provide information about the localization of the Russian user database. The fine is 3,000 rubles.

The main thing you need to know

• In February 2018, Roskomnadzor drew up an administrative protocol on Twitter - before that, the agency sent the company a request to localize the personal data bases of Russian users on the territory of Russia, but did not receive a response within the established deadline.
• After that, the protocol was sent to court. In total, three court hearings were held on the case, the first of which took place on March 22, the last on April 5.
• Twitter believes that the company is not legally obligated to respond to Roskomnadzor's requests and that Russian legislation in general should not apply to foreign players. A Twitter representative petitioned the court to dismiss the case, but the judge rejected the petition.

Roskomnadzor drew up a similar protocol regarding Facebook, but there is no decision on the case yet.
