The organizer of an environmental rally in Arkhangelsk was detained and left in police custody overnight

Environmental activist Yury Chesnokov, who organized an April 7 rally in Arkhangelsk against the import of garbage from Moscow, was detained by police on April 6. Lawyer Elena Dolganova told OVD-Info about this.

Chesnokov was detained in Arkhangelsk on the street while he was waiting for a taxi. The police told him that he was facing a trial for non-payment of fines. He was taken to the Lomonosov police department, where he was left for 48 hours.

According to the lawyer, on April 2, two reports were drawn up against Chesnokov on non-payment of administrative fines (Article 20.25 of the Code of Administrative Offenses) for violating traffic rules. On April 3, the Lensky District Court of the Arkhangelsk Region refused to consider these cases and sent them to Arkhangelsk according to its jurisdiction.

Dolganova also said that at night the prosecutor came to the department, who studied the materials of Chesnokov's administrative files for about an hour and a half together with the head of the department for the execution of administrative legislation. He did not communicate with Chesnokov himself and the lawyer, and after studying the materials he left. One of the police officers told the lawyer that the prosecutor had found that the files were drawn up legally.

On April 7, environmental rallies are planned in a number of Russian cities, mainly dedicated to the import of garbage from Moscow. The rally in Arkhangelsk, the organizers failed to coordinate with the authorities. Local activist Yelena Vesnina wrote on her VKontakte page that the rally in Plesetsk was approved, but "the stage was fenced off, and the administration staff sawed off the stairs to this stage."
