Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia committed suicide while being detained on corruption charges.

Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia, who tried to commit suicide during his arrest, died in hospital. This was announced by the current Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra.

“Grieved by the death of former President Alan Garcia. My condolences to his family and loved ones," Vizcarra tweeted.

Earlier, the Latin American television channel Telesur reported about the death of Garcia .

• Alan Garcia shot himself in the head on April 17 when police arrived at his home to arrest him on a corruption case. Garcia was hospitalized in critical condition.
• Garcia served as President of Peru twice, from 1985 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2011. He is suspected of taking bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht during his second term in office.
